Cave Story (洞窟物語 - Doukutsu Monogatari)

Do you require a method to waste your time? No matter, I'm obliged to spread the word about this wonderful platformer from a small developer in Japan. This freeware game easily trumps classics such as Mario and Contra for the "Best Platformer Award" and I'll tell you why.

Three separate endings, multiple unique weapons, hundreds of secrets, interesting enemies, solid controls, a great story, love-able characters and a memorable soundtrack make this game tick.

You start off as a robot and you soon start on a quest to save some cute critters known as Mimagas who are being abducted one by one. Sounds corny, but several twists mature the storyline into something which would have come out of a hit novelist. If you decide to get to the secret stage, be prepared for even more story to digest.

A variety of weapons which you can level-up aid you along the way. Take for example, a simple machine gun doubles as a mini-jet pack when you hit level 3. A bubble gun (which I must add - is some sort of a secret weapon) becomes a rotating wheel of death at level 3. Another weapon shoots ducks at level 3.

The soundtrack alone stands with greats such as the ones from Mario. If you want to sample the tracks, you can head down here. The soundtrack also has a steady following, with fans even remixing all the tracks.

Don't be put down by it's fluid 8-bit graphics, after a while they fit into the game perfectly, along with a certain charm to it. Add a perfect soundtrack, controls, story and five years of development to this gem of a platformer and you get an indie hit. Do yourself a favour and get this game now. It doesn't matter whether you are a fan of platformers or not - you owe yourself to get this game.

A PSP version of this game is being developed by Variant Games.

Yes, I ripped *some* images off the manual. And if you intend to play it only once, I suggest you get a walkthrough and get the best ending.
